#3-Pass The Story Down

<<Legacy
Pass the story down from generation to generation (Joel 1:3 NLT).

“Grandma, do you know everywhere you walk, you leave your footprints?”

Looking down, I saw a perfect set of footprints on the freshly carpeted floor. My granddaughter was right—
and her words gripped my heart. She was watching my every move, even where I walked.

It made me wonder—what kind of impression am I leaving on the hearts of my grandchildren?

Someone said,  “A child is born only once, but a grandparent is reborn with each new grandchild”. How True! Grandchildren know how to pour new life into grandparents.

There’s just no greater joy than spending time with them. My husband, Dave and I are always excited about having the grand-kids come for a visit. We may sometimes be tired when they leave to go home, but its the most rewarding tired there is! It doesn’t take long for us to rest up and we’re ready for them to come again!

I think of my Grandma Biggs. She was the happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren, yet the joy of the Lord remained constant in her life no matter whom she was with. My greatest childhood memories were made  in the love and joy I felt when I went to grandma’s house.

I was always greeted with a joyful smile and big hug. Her laughter was contagious—her love unconditional. Grandma was always there for me—to listen—to pray—to encourage.

Even after she died, memories of her life were a constant source of encouragement.
And when life’s challenges left me shaken in faith and in need of wisdom; I asked myself, “What would Grandma want me to do.” I knew the answer.  This loving fortress of a woman always encouraged me to look to the Lord for strength and direction.

I know He hears my heart’s cry. I know He loves and forgives me. I know my life is a work in progress.

And so is yours. He will complete the work He started in me—and in you!

Lord,  Help us leave loving footprints of the Savior on the hearts of others for generations to come. Amen.

  1. This is beautiful, Glenda. Each one of us will someday be somebody’s memory . . . a legacy to our grandchildren, and one from our grandparents. You are rich! (and so am I). Thank you for a precious reminder of what we receive from others . . . and give back . . . a loving legacy.

  4. I love that photo, Glenda. Brings back memories of my own grandmothers! I’m not a grandparent yet, but I’m already thinking about the legacy I want to leave. I love the words to a choir anthem we used to sing back in the 80s: May all who come behind us find us faithful!

  5. Hi Glenda,

    Love the snow pics!

I’m just at that place where I’m gearing up to be in Grandma mode. Daughter #1 just celebrated her 1st anniversary with her wonderful husband, and although they’re not “ready” yet, I know she’s got the fever. At 24, a lot of her friends already have children of their own and she’s tired of being the babysitter:-) But all that’s to say, it’s an interesting place for me to be in, because growing up on the mission field, I had very little interaction with my grandparents. We had “replacements” on the field – older missionary couples who doted on us – but my relationships with my real grandparents was through letters and rare (every four years) visits. Instead of looking at it in a bad way, however, I look at it like I do my adopted status – that I have no “predisposed” family traits I must comply to/with and therefore, I am free to be the best Grandma I can be in CHRIST. And boy, as I think about the time coming ahead, I’m excited. Thanks for sharing your heart today.

    Hugs,
    Becky

  6. Glenda, this is wonderful! When our first grandchild was born, I told the Lord that there must be some way to describe the emotions and event of holding that baby for the first time. He whispered in my spirit, “Nan, think of all the double blessings (portions) I gave My children throughout My Word. A grandchild is precisely that – a double blessing. All the love you have for your child is doubled in your grandbabies.” Isn’t that beautiful? Thank you for your thought-provoking words. Bless you!

  7. Grandma, I absolutely LOVE this last post! Your writing has encouraged me and many others. Sadly, I have never met Great-Grandma Biggs (Pa-Paw or Ma-Maw), although I know that one day I will be able to rejoice with them in heaven! I have always cherished our many “visits to Grandma’s house”, we always create so many wonderful memories, each and every time! I’m looking forward to our next visit over Thanksgiving! LOVE YOU!
